Fishing and Anchors

Recently I went and did something I always enjoy.... fishing.
I attached my boat to our van, and invited my pastor and off we went to nearby White Lake looking for largemouth bass - one of my favorite fish to catch.

It just so happened that the wind was blowing quite hard that afternoon, actually pushing my boat along at quite a clip. This made it difficult for our bait to drop down low enough to interest anything.

So we dropped the anchor and dragged it along which slowed us down enough and soon we had some largemouth action.

Well it wasn't long before we decided that the fish in the area were not interested in our presence and so off we went to another spot on the lake. As I attempted to accelerate out of the area I noticed the motor was not performing as well as usual. You guessed it. I was attempting to drive down the lake while dragging my anchor. Well, I was a little too late in this realization. There was a jolt and then all of a sudden we were free. I stopped the boat and anxiously recovered the anchor rope which was by now not attached to anything.

In trying to spiritualize my poor boating skills, I wonder how many of us are trying to race down the lake of our life with an anchor dragging behind us, impeding our journey, without us even knowing about it?

Hebrews in the New Testament says, "let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." (Heb 12:1)

What are your anchors?
