Thoughts on the Apple Tree

Recently I picked a whole box of apples from one of our trees…it took me only 10 minutes…it then took my wife Lore most of the day to peel, core, cut, cook and “can” them.

The good news is that we’ll have apple sauce all winter. The other ‘good’ news is that there are more apples still on the tree.

The other task was less ‘satisfying’…I raked and bagged 1500 apples that had fallen to the ground from this same tree. It is back breaking work, especially for a tall guy working under low hanging branches. These then had to be transported to the community recycle depot. Lore was still “canning”. So Gerry you might ask…what’s the point? Does there always have to be a point? Perhaps. Maybe you can respond by sharing with us what your take on this experience might be.

  • This one little 30 year-old apple tree produced over 2500 apples! (And we have 3 trees!)
  • This is “much fruit”…remind you of something?
  • For everything there is a season…last year, picking in August was too early…this year waiting till late August is really too late…hence the large numbers on the ground.
  • There is much work bringing in the harvest…some of it spoils but the best taste beautiful and will last a long time once properly preserved.
  • My back will recover because I diligently exercise it and prepare it for the occasional stress.

I can’t help but hope that I can be as productive in life as this old tree is in producing fruit. Lord…pass me around among your people that I might be a fragrance of YOUR righteousness Help me to be diligent in preparing for what You have ahead for me.

Sincerely…because of the Cross…another “tree” of great significance!
